Mayor Gregory J. Heep banned citizens from carrying guns on public owned property earlier today, effective immediately.
"It’s madness to bring guns to public gathering places," said Carla Worthingham, whose daughter was blinded last June in a random drive by shooting at the public library. "It only invites disaster."
The order, which does not need any City Council approval, spawns from a recent incident involving a firearm on public property. Three people were shot on May 24th at the Folklife Festival when a man with a concealed weapon lost his cool. However, not all people agree with the mayors decision including Walt Hostetler, the legislative director of the Committee to Keep and Bear Arms.
“Our state has a longstanding firearms statute that a permits the legal carry of concealed handguns by licensed private citizens on city property," he said. "This order violates the letter and the spirit of that statute.”
