Pullman and Moscow fire departments responded to an apartment fire early this morning near the border. Authorities found four victims at the scene, two females and two males, who had been shot and severely burned. The two women, 13 year-old Janice L. Carothers and 17 year-old Samantha M. Jones, were rushed to the hospital but pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Both male victims were pronounced dead at the apartment and will be identified by the medical examiner following his preliminary review. Gunshots were heard shortly before the fire was reported, and authorities believe the blaze was a ploy to cover up the homicide. Four people managed to escape the neighboring apartments unharmed. The incident is being investigated by Tony Anderson, the Whitman County Prosecutors Office Chief Detective. Anderson has organized a task force to investigate the event. Four people escaped from the neighboring apartments unharmed.
